Paralympian Advocates for Wheelchair Users and Amputees via SaveMyMedicalSupplies.org

As a recent amputee, Thomas Morris discovered a whole new world when he attended his first Abilities Expo three years ago.  Today, he’s returning to the Expo as an ambassador and care advocate for a new program—www.SaveMyMedicalSupplies.org—that aims to help Medicare beneficiaries in receiving necessary medical equipment, supplies and repairs.

“I’m in training right now to be a peer counselor for other amputees. It makes me happy to give back and help others find resources they need, just like someone helped me when I needed a hand,” Morris explains.

As part of his efforts, Thomas filmed a short interview with SaveMyMedicalSupplies.org that shares his struggle with living with diabetes, and sheds light on the care issues that diabetics are facing nationwide due to Medicare’s mismanaged National Mail Order program.

Thomas is just one of many care advocates who have joined forces to support www.SaveMyMedicalSupplies.org and their new campaign designed to educate Medicare beneficiaries, their families and care providers on how Medicare reform mistakes are impacting people with serious medical needs.

Paralympian Bert Burns, the founder of Life After Spinal Cord Injury [LASCI], and the dynamic duo Mike Berkson & Tim Wambach from Handicap This! have also lent their voices to the effort.

In his video interview with SMMS, Bert Burns shares his perspective on life as a wheelchair user as well as explaining why Medicare reform mistakes are making it nearly impossible for Medicare beneficiaries to get wheelchair repairs.

The SMMS website, as well as the Save My Medical Supplies Facebook page and Twitter feed, explains Medicare reform challenges in a way that is easy for anybody to understand. Specifically, the site explains how Medicare reform mistakes are hurting access to medical supplies or equipment (like wheelchairs) for people who have:

  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Diabetes
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Spina Bifida
  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Other Medical Conditions

SMMS visitors can email their Congressional representatives through a quick and easy tool on the site, sharing their personal stories and urging Congress to stop Medicare reform mistakes or by requesting immediate help to improve access to wheelchair repairs.

Speak up for your right to quality healthcare by visiting SaveMyMedicalSupplies today!  Together, we can support Medicare reform that helps, not hurts.

And be sure to visit the Boston Abilities Expo in September where you’ll be able to meet Paralympian Bert Burns in person during his workshop on Life After Spinal Cord Injury!
