Accessible Chicago Makes its Debut to City Leaders and Disability Advocates

The docu-series, which highlights the accessibility and inclusivity of multiple attractions in the city of Chicago, premiered on February 13th at the Museum of Science and Industry. The event delivered an evening of inspiration and disability awareness, bringing together key figures in accessibility advocacy and representatives from prominent Chicago institutions.

This dynamic line-up included Susan Brehm of the U.S. Department of Commerce, Glenn Eden of Choose Chicago, Dr. Anne Harris from Grinnell College, Rachel Arfa from the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, Daniel Thomas from the Illinois Office of Tourism, Jack Lavin from the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, who all contributed insights into the significance of Accessible Chicago in enhancing tourism experiences for people with disabilities. Also in attendance and support of Vanessa’s heroic efforts was Abilities Expo Chairman Lew Shomer.

Accessible Chicago went wide on Wednesday, February 14th, and can be enjoyed on AccessibleChicago.com and on CAN TV.

Docu-series Highlights Chicago as Disability-Friendly Destination

“We want Chicago to be known internationally as a disability-friendly city,” said Vanessa, in an interview. “People with disabilities have money to spend, and we want them to spend it in Chicago.”

Accessible Chicago aims not only to showcase fun and accessible destinations but also to encourage other facilities to enhance their accessibility. “We’re really trying hard to make sure every place is accessible. While some have done a good job, there’s still a long way to go,” she stated. Strategy for Access Foundation is actively working with facilities to provide guidance and support in improving their access to the disability community.

The series features 16 different locations, including the DuSable Museum, the Museum of Science and Industry, the Field Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Lincoln Park Zoo, among others. These attractions have been selected not only for their entertainment value but also for their commitment to accessibility.

Shomer commended the initiative, stating, “The Strategy for Access Accessible Chicago docu-series is a wonderful example of how disability advocacy can work in concert with industry to achieve accessibility for all. At Abilities Expo, we believe in creating environments that cater to all abilities, and Vanessa’s work here is a significant step towards that goal.”
