Steve Serio’s Climb to Paralympic Glory

At the tender age of just 11-months old, the son of Ed and Hilary Serio needed surgery to remove a spinal tumor. That procedure resulted in the compression of Steve’s spinal cord, which caused paralysis and his subsequent classification as an incomplete paraplegic.

His first taste of wheelchair basketball came in high school on the only competitive junior wheelchair basketball team in the state of New York, the Long Island Lightning. He was already a natural, making a name for himself in both national and international competitions. During college at University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, Steve was 2nd Team All American, led the Fighting Illini to a national championship and made his Paralympic debut in Bejing in 2008.

After Steve graduated in 2010 with a degree in Exercise Physiology, he began playing professionally in Germany for RSV Lahn-Dill and took another run at the Paralympics in London, winning the bronze medal. His first gold came in the 2016 Games in Rio.

Then, at 33 years old, the talented Team Toyota athlete won his third Paralympic medal in Tokyo, winning the gold medal in men’s wheelchair basketball as part of Team USA at the Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 on Sunday, September 5, 2021.

Competition Highlights

  • Paralympic Games Rio 2016, gold
  • Paralympic Games London 2012, bronze
  • Paralympic Games Beijing 2008, 4th
  • Four-time World Championship medalist, silver (2006, 2014, 2018), bronze (2010)
