Bowhead Era™ Wheelchair Debuts at Abilities Expo LA

Bowhead Corporation, the maker of the world’s leading adaptive offroad bikes, has officially entered the wheelchair market with the Bowhead Era, a next-generation carbon fiber manual wheelchair.

Modular, lightweight features built for work, play and adaptive sports

The Era wheelchair’s revolutionary modular design gives users a choice in sizes of its vibration dampening carbon fiber chassis, from very small setups with 20” wheels, to larger configurations utilizing 24”and 25” wheels, and it features a removable seat with torsion bar suspension. The Era can include Bowhead’s light and durable 559s, the first carbon fiber rims designed specifically for wheelchair use, and their 7s, hub-less casters that eliminate the eternal problem of “hair down there.”

The Era accommodates industry-standard seat back and cushions, and the company’s Fit-for-Life™ system allows seating specialists and users to easily adjust the chair, including width, as needs change, all with a single tool. The Era is patented and removeable seating mechanism accepts swappable seats designed purposefully for work, play, leisure, therapy, and recreation.

The first 50 Era chairs will ship with Bowhead Sport Ports™, an accessory that allows a user to convert their Era to a court chair, with 16 or 18 degrees of camber, to participate in recreational sports such as basketball, tennis and pickleball, in a matter of minutes. Additionally, the Era will support leading power assist devices, such as the SmartDrive, Empulse R90, Batec and FireFly.

Innovation for next-gen wheelchair driven by real-world experience

Christian Bagg, Chief Design Officer and co-founder of Bowhead, and a recent winner of the Canadian Governor General’s award for innovation, has been working on the chassis design of the Era for quite some time. In fact, Bagg has been riding the precursor to the Era for 12+ years, virtually maintenance free.

“The wheelchair market has been dominated by products that are just good enough. But that’s not how we do things at Bowhead” said Bagg. “We listen to our customers, trust ourselves, and believe our solutions are not only the best-in-class, but serve as the beginning of a relationship with our customers for life.”

The company continues to grow its Bowhead for Life™ (BFL) community. The program kicked off the new year with special pricing on the Era for current Bowhead bike owners, introduced one-on-one video fitting consultation sessions for prospective Era users, and will evolve over the first quarter of 2025 to include an affiliation economy. BFL will encourage members to accumulate currency they can use to help fund future Bowhead product purchases such as bikes, wheelchairs, spare parts, accessories and Bowhead branded merchandise.
