This presentation explores how adaptive fishing programs create inclusive outdoor experiences for individuals with physical disabilities by reducing barriers to participation and promoting accessibility. Through adaptive equipment, community support, and accessible fishing opportunities, Chicago No Limits Fishing demonstrates how fishing can empower participants, build confidence, encourage independence, and strengthen social connections. The presentation highlights the importance of accessibility, inclusion, and advocacy in ensuring that fishing and nature experiences are available to people of all abilities.
The Chicago area has many accessible fishing locations that provide opportunities for individuals of all abilities who are interested in fishing. Chicago No Limits Fishing will review accessible fishing sites with features such as paved pathways, accessible parking, fishing piers, and barrier-free amenities to help reduce participation barriers while promoting inclusion and independence.
The presentation will introduce participants to adaptive fishing equipment designed to improve accessibility and increase participation for individuals with disabilities. Examples include power-assist fishing reels, arm and wrist support braces, and grip-assist reel devices that all provide assistance to individuals who want to fish. There will be an opportunity for individuals to try the equipment either at the presentation or at the Chicago No Limits table, located near the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab Booth.
