A Vision for the Future of Outdoor Access
Ten years ago, if you were a wheelchair user who wanted to go off-road, your options were limited, unpredictable, and often accompanied by that quietly devastating phrase: “I’m sorry, it’s not accessible.”
The outdoor and adventure sector has come a long way since then. All-terrain powerchairs. Adaptive hiking programmes. Off-road handcycles. Organisations slowly waking up to the fact that disabled people don’t just want access — they want adventure.
But we’re not done. Not even close.
My name is Nick Wilson — powerchair adventurer, accessibility advocate, and the man currently halfway through completing 50km trail sections across the UK, Austria, and Dubai in an electric powerchair. I’ve clocked over 25 million views sharing what’s possible on four wheels, and I’ve spent years working with venues, trail organisations, and technology innovators to push the boundaries of what adaptive outdoor access can look like.
In this talk, I’ll take you through the evolution of adaptive adventure — from the scrappy, “make-do” early days to the genuinely game-changing equipment, programmes, and partnerships that exist today. I’ll share what’s working, what’s still failing us, and why the biggest barrier to progress isn’t terrain, funding, or technology.
It’s imagination.
Because my vision for where this sector needs to go isn’t just about better kit or more accessible car parks. It’s about Adaptive Off-Roading becoming a recognised sport. It’s about multi-day wilderness expeditions being a realistic ambition for powerchair users. It’s about the outdoor world not just tolerating disabled adventurers — but being built for us.
This is the future I’m building. And I want to show you why it matters for all of us.
