ATC Mobility’s SUV Conversions Pass Crash Testing

ATC Mobility announced that its wheelchair-accessible SUV conversions have successfully passed Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) crash testing. The approval expands wheelchair users’ access to full-size, all-terrain SUVs, an option previously limited in the mobility market.

This achievement is especially significant because it enables ATC’s converted Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL models to qualify for many state and federal mobility funding programs and makes the converted vehicle eligible for approval by the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA). While ATC’s truck conversions have long met this threshold, this marks the first time ATC-converted SUVs are eligible under the same standards.

Crash tests confirm SUV strength

During crash testing, ATC Mobility provided a single converted SUV – not separate vehicles – to undergo all three major FMVSS crash tests: frontal, side impact and rear offset. The vehicle passed each test, underscoring the structural integrity of ATC’s patented frame-integrated conversion. The reinforced gull-wing side door and reproduced B-pillar retain or exceed OEM strength on the entry side, an uncommon result in mobility conversions.

“Today’s approval opens doors – literally and figuratively – for wheelchair users who want more than just transportation,” said Steve Kitchin, President of ATC Mobility. “This proves that independence, performance and lifestyle do not come at the expense of safety. They can, and should, go hand-in-hand. We’re extremely proud to have expanded what’s possible.”
