Do you wish you had a way to save for the cool things on display at the Abilities Expos? An “Achieving a Better Life Experience” or ABLE account may be a solution for you and your family!
What is an Able Account?
An ABLE account is a savings and investment account that can be owned by eligible people with disabilities.
Money saved in an ABLE account can help pay for a wide range of expenses that come with living with a disability; services and products such as therapy, assistive technology, equipment, job training, education, and even daily living expenses, such as groceries and rent. And your ABLE account may be able to pay for many of the services and products on display at the Abilities Expo!
ABLE account owners who receive federal means-tested benefits can save money in their ABLE account, which can protect those benefits – something a regular checking account cannot do. Social Security Supplemental Income (SSI) recipients can save up to $100,000 in an ABLE account before affecting benefits.
Additional Benefits of Opening an Illinois ABLE Account
There are tax advantages to owning an ABLE account too. Earnings and withdrawals on an ABLE account are federally tax-free when used for qualified disability expenses. And many of the 46 states that offer ABLE Plans also offer state income tax benefits to people who make contributions to an ABLE account.
Contributions of up to $19,000 in 2025 can be made from almost any source – family, friends, even fundraisers – in an ABLE account, and working account owners may be able to contribute even more!
Additionally, ABLE accounts can be an alternative, or add-on, to a special needs trust.

Great news! Starting January 1, 2026, the current eligibility requirement of disability onset before age 26 will increase to disability onset before age 46. Six million more Americans, including many veterans, will become eligible to own an ABLE account and can start saving for expenses that help to improve health, quality of life, and independence.
Learn more about ABLE accounts! Stop by the IL ABLE Booth #916, June 20 – 22, 2025, at the Chicago Abilities Expo in Schaumburg, IL for information or to fill out an enrollment form.
