Abilities Expo Houston to Host Cosplay Event
Expo to also Feature Assistive Tech, Sports, Dancing and Latest Products for Disability Community, August 4-6, 2017
Houston, TX – People with disabilities, their families, caregivers, seniors, wounded vets and healthcare professionals attending Abilities Expo (#AbilitiesExpo) on August 4-6, 2017 at the NRG Center are eagerly anticipating the newest feature: Mock Cosplay Competition, held Saturday from 1:00 to 1:30 pm.
Attendees are encouraged to embrace their fandom and come to the Expo dressed as their favorite characters. Prizes are for all, but bonus points for those who can incorporate their mobility device into their costumes.
"It's not just that we provide a forum that showcases essential technology to bridge the gap between ability and disability," said David Korse, president and CEO of Abilities Expo. "The Expo is always new and exciting with a host of all-inclusive, adaptive activities."
Admission to Abilities Expo is free and the show hours will be Friday and Saturday 11 am to 5 pm and Sunday 11 am to 4 pm.
Complimentary loaner scooters, wheelchair repair and sign language interpreters will also be available during show hours.
"The Expo provides the community of people with disabilities access to life-enhancing products, education, resources and fun," said Korse. "Most of all, it's a celebration of what you can do, not what you can't."
Abilities Meet Up Zone
In the tradition of a town square, the Abilities Meet Up Zone is a dedicated area on the show floor where attendees can interact with both peers and experts. In fact, many workshop and event presenters will stop by the Zone to engage one-on-one with attendees. Regardless of an individual's need—whether they have a spinal cord injury from a recent accident, are parents to a child with autism or have a debilitating disease—the Zone is a place to share experiences and get answers. And the kids will love the face painting and photo booth.
"In order to engage our community and provide them with a more experiential visit, we have created this Zone for attendees to interact with each other and meet one-on-one with experts knowledgeable about the types of disabilities they may have," said Abilities Expo Co-owner Lew Shomer. "It is the next step in enhancing the overall Expo experience for our attendees."
Latest Products and Services
Attendees will experience cutting-edge products and services for people with a wide range of disabilities. They will find mobility products, devices for people with developmental disabilities, medical equipment, home accessories, essential services, low-cost daily living aids, products for people with sensory impairments and much more. The Assistive Technology Showcase will feature cutting-edge AT for people to experience hands-on.
A series of compelling workshops which address pressing disability issues will be offered free-of-charge to all attendees. Sessions will focus on travel, emergency preparedness, Autism, therapeutic cannabis, finance, alternative therapies and more. On August 6, caregivers are welcome for sessions on stress relief, better sleep and future planning. CEU-earning, career development seminars for physical therapists, occupational therapists and other disability professionals will be offered on August 5.
Adaptive Sports, Dancing, Celebrities and More
Abilities Expo does not merely inform, it engages and it entertains. Attendees of all levels of ability can test their skills with adaptive sports like sled hockey, rugby, boccia, tennis, ride-along racing, basketball and meet wheelchair motocross athlete Jerry Diaz. Get in the groove with Push Girl Auti Angel for some freestyle dance.
WAV Walk Around Wellness
There will be a free 22-point check-up service for your wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV), by appointment only. The inspection includes interior/exterior, WAV conversion, under hood, under carriage and more.
Meet the Animals
Animals have become an intrinsic part of the disability community. Some are essential to the healing process, while others help their human partners become more independent. Expo-goers will enjoy demonstrations by assistance dogs.
